Whether you’re new here or have been around for a while, getting around our expansive campus can seem a bit daunting. But don’t worry—we’ve got all the info you need to make your travels around Rutgers easy and stress-free.

Bus System Highlights

  • Daily Trips: Our buses are quite busy, handling over 55,000 trips every day during the school year.
  • Size and Scope: We have the second-largest bus system in New Jersey.
  • Student Ambassadors: Look for our friendly student ambassadors at major bus stops. They’re there to help you navigate the bus routes and get where you need to go, especially during the first few weeks of the semester.

Tips for Bus Travel

  • Real-Time Tracking: Use the PassioGo App or the MyRutgers App to track your bus in real-time.
  • Be Punctual: Arrive at your bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Plan ahead and get to the stop up to 45 minutes before your class starts.
  • Safety Tips: Wait at designated stops, stand a few feet back from the curb, and always use crosswalks. Avoid walking in traffic lanes for your safety.
  • Be Patient: The buses are often packed full and behind schedule throughout the first few weeks of classes. Leave for class earlier and anticipate traffic and/or setbacks.
  • Watch and Learn: Scan the QR codes around campus to watch helpful travel tips videos.

Parking & Transportation FAQs

  • Bus Hours: On the New Brunswick campus, buses run from 6:00 AM to 3:30 AM Monday through Thursday, and they operate 24/7 on weekends.
  • Free Rides: Riding Rutgers buses is free on all campuses.
  • ID Requirements: No ID is needed on the New Brunswick and Camden campuses, but you will need one in Newark.

Parking Information

  • Lots and Permits: We have 277 parking lots and decks, issuing 10,000-12,000 parking permits each semester.
  • Event Support: Our parking services assist with around 2,000 events on campus every year.
  • Freshmen Parking: Freshmen can bring cars to campus, but with our efficient bus system, it’s not necessary.
  • Permit Sales: Fall permits go on sale in August, and spring permits in January. Log in with your NetID and password to get one.
  • Permit Costs: Visit the Rutgers website for the latest prices and parking locations. Permits are valid for one semester.

Additional Help

  • Questions or Feedback: If you have any questions or need to provide feedback about parking or buses, visit dotshelp.rutgers.edu.

With this guide, you’re all set to navigate Rutgers with ease. Safe travels and see you around campus!

Our son is on the dorm waitlist. Is there a temporary parking permit available? If so, is there is cost or is it courtesy pass? Should we purchase parking permit? If yes, can we get a refund once he gets his dorm assignment?

My student's parking permit is NBRLIVF######. Which lot can my student park for overnight? There are so many. We found out that it is over at Livingston.

My daughter had to Uber basically all day yesterday. Every time the bus would show up the driver would not let them board because it was full. Is this normal?
