Your student should have already, or be in the process of registering for New Student Orientation. This two-day, overnight session is designed to ensure your student has all the tools and knowledge they need to start their academic adventure successfully at Rutgers University - New Brunswick.
Our Summer Student Orientation spans two days, offering an immersive experience to help your student settle into the Rutgers community.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Check-In: The program starts with check-in from 8:15 am to 9:15 am at the McCormick Suite on Busch Campus where your student will be staying. They will share a double room in a six-person suite. A list of what your student should pack is attached to this post!
- Meals: Rutgers Dining will provide lunch and dinner on Day 1 and breakfast and lunch on Day 2. All meals will be served at the Busch Dining Hall.
- Course Registration: Day 2 is crucial for course registration. Be sure your student brings their NetID, password, and DUO device. If they have AP, IB, A-level, or dual enrollment/transfer credits, bring those transcripts and score reports (official in an unopened envelope, unofficial copies, or login information for online access).
- First-Year Program: Includes interactive presentations and small group activities, to learn about the Rutgers campus, connect with various departments and resources, and receive guidance from current students and Orientation Leaders.
- Academic Sessions: These include breakout sessions specific to the schools students are enrolled in. They will hear from advisors and faculty and either register for courses or work with an advisor to understand their course program. Students should remember to complete the Placement Exams before attending orientation.
- Parent and Family Orientation: Registration is now live at parents.rutgers.edu/orientation. This program is optional and spaces do fill up. Due to the presence of the New Student Orientation, students do not attend Parent and Family Orientation.

The room my son will be allotted for this 2 day orientation, will that be his permanent room? Can he bring everything else (all his stuff) to keep there at this time?
Hello, when is moving day for freshman, do they have specific time to drop off?
Hi - what time is orientation over ? Thanks!
Hi Alison,
Parent and Family Orientation is over at 4:30. Student Orientation is over around the same time depending on where your student is in their schedule.
Where can we find the slides that were presented at orientation? Thank you!
